Spam is unsolicited email, usually commercial, that advertises a product or service. It is mass mailed to thousands of email addresses at once, and is often used to propagate scams, offensive content and viruses. Some companies send legitimate email promoting their services or products. An example of a legitimate email that is not spam is a newsletter that individuals have signed up for.
The problem of spam has hit an all-time high. Some users receive thousands of spam emails per day. But there are some things you can do to stop spam from hitting your inbox.
The best way to stop spam is to install anti-spam software on your computer. This will filter out spam messages and send them to a junk email folder instead of your inbox. Many anti-virus programs are already using spam blockers to protect your inbox. If you already have an anti-virus application running on your system, check and see if a spam blocker is included. If not, there are many good spam blockers on the market, some of which are free.
If you aren't using an anti-virus program, it is recommended that you get one. This will not only protect your PC from spam (if it includes a spam blocker), but also from other threats such as viruses, worms, trojan horses and in some cases spyware and malware. Most anti-virus programs include an email scanner function which scans your incoming and outgoing emails for the potential threats just mentioned.
Don't open email attachments if you don't know or trust the source. Be careful, even well-meaning friends and associates can unknowingly send attachments with viruses. This is especially common with forwarded chain emails. If you have any doubts, just don't open it. The same goes with any spam emails. Don't open them if you can tell by the subject or from line that they are spam. If you do happen to open, delete it immediately. Don't click on any links or pictures inside the spam message. Don't try or buy anything. Don't reply to the message either, even if you want to tell the sender to stop the mailings. It won't work.
By following the above guidelines, you should be able to significantly reduce the amount of spam you receive in your inbox.
